When Holden was asked what exactly he liked he said

“You know that song ‘if a body catch a body comin’ through the rye?’ I’d like-“

Then he was corrected by his sister Phoebe “It’s ‘If a body meet a body coming through the rye! It’s a poem by Robert Burns which is the poem above. There are many discussions about the meaning of the ‘Rye” in this poem. One accountable explanation says that it’s a river called Rye Water in Scotland.

Before Holden said this poem he told his sister about the guy called James Castle who committed *** by jumping out through a window. Holden said “I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids and nobody’s around-nobody big I mean-except me. And I am standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff-I mean if they’re running and they don’t look where they’re going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That’s all I’d do all day. I’d just be the catcher in the rye and all.”

Frankly I was bothered by numbers of the dirty words like"goddamn" and others. It's banned for quite a long time for this reason. A mother counted there were 785 obscene words in the book totally. Even having finished half of this book I did not have much affection in it. When finished about two thirds of it I found it’s all about Holden’s petty experiences in school at Mr. Spencer’s… and in New York; all about his opinions of those he met and he had met. It's PETTY. But I did admire the author J.D Salinger because the novel is about Huldon's TWO days life. The book has TWENTY-SIX chapers more than 200 pages! Marvelous!

Even though I thought it's petty read from the very beginning to the end-the last one third of it was touching though which made me did not want to stop reading utill the end. And what even ridiculous was not until I finished the first 16 chapters 122 pages did I knew it’s the English version of the famous book in Chinese called 《麦田的守望者》.

The closer I got to the end of it the more I liked it. The funny thing was when I read the sentence “It’s raining. It’s starting to rain”-at the very end of chapter 25 when Holden and Phoebe were playing carrousel a drop of rain fell on my arm because I was sitting around the Lotus pond of campus. I was shocked!!! “Right it’s raining. It’s starting to rain” I said in heart. The Catcher In The Rye catched the heart.

The more enlightening part except the coincidence of the rain was what Holden’s said at the end “I mean how do you know what you are going to don till you do it? The answer is you don’t. I think I am but how do I know? I swear it’s a stupid question.” Why was I constantly annoyed by some stupid questions like ‘what am I going to do in the future?’

Personally I think it's the desire in Holden’s heart that he wishes there is a catcher around the cliff of life who can catch them when kids like him are going to going over it accidentally-I read from the Internet that the book reflected what the adolescents’ inner emotions at that time. From all that Holden thought in the book we can certainly feel his loneness. The scene when he sneaked in his OWN home and waked Old Phoebe up chatting with her almost made me cry. Probably it was the happiest time since those days. He was really lonesome wandering around for several days daring not to go home. But he didn’t ever cry only when Old Phoebe handed him her “eight dollars and sixty-five cents”. He cried in dark. The whole part reminded me of a close friend who went through all the wrong ways. He might be the Holden who wanted to be the catcher in the rye and more importantly he needed the catcher in the rye.
