Written by an American vision artist -- Audrey Niffenegger “The Time Traveler’s Wife” is a story full of imagination and very touching. Set in Chicago with an intricate time web it is an elongated and complex love story. The hero Henry born with a genetic disease which makes him can travel through time worked in a library and was once a playboy until he met his destined wife. The ***e Clare is an artist whose entire life is twisted with Henry since their first meet when she was 6 and he from the age of 36. Time travelling though sounds charming and fantastic is a very dangerous journey actually. Henry incessantly left and came back to Clare without any hint which left Clare with desperate waiting infinitely. Tortured by the unstable existence of her husband Clare risked her life trying to a child of them as a gift for herself. After arduous process they finally had a daughter. Unfortunately she is also a patient of the rare disease. There is also a crueler fact that the end had already predestined at the beginning. Only when Clare is 13 Henry from the age of 43 was killed unintentionally by Clare’s father while hunting.
Though with an intricate background of time travelling the plot is so well structured that every scenario is consistent throughout the story without any contradiction. Remove the elaborate and delicate time structure from the story the love legend itself is very meaningful. Clare’s love for the untraceable time traveler is so strong and genuine. She can’t always keep track of him and therefore have to bear the loneliness of waiting whenever he disappears. He comes to Clare from all the directions and time and leaves her randomly which makes her eventually accustomed to the constant surprise and loss. Driven by the simple desire to keep Henry permanently with her she tried hard at the expense of her life to have a child of them again and again. The most touching scene is that in the end when the 82-year-old Clare finally met his Henry again who this time travelled from the age of 43 just as he promised in his last letter to Clare before his death. When I read this last chapter I can’t help crying and let my tears stream down my face freely.
I think what the author want to present by this moving story is that there is no tragedy in true love. Love can transcend everything and make even time and space fade out in front of it. It is an eternal topic for our human beings.
