Twilight《Any one who likes romance would like it》

A few weeks ago I decided as long as I was going to watch the coming Twilight the New Moon I might as well read the Twilight saga thoroughly.

Reading Twilight was reminiscent of my high school reading of romances. It was a page-turner but I stayed up ridiculously late reading until the last page. Indeed it was geared toward female readers. There were quite a few scenes that was a bit gratuitous pandering to the (teenage girl or desperate housewife?) audience who wanted to see romance and kissing and ‘omg he touched me!’ moments.

I think most teenage girls could see themselves in Bella which indulged the Cinderella fantasy of making common awkward female character gained great affection from a mysterious and seemingly powerful male character. Stephenie Meyer’s Edward was a bit like Jane Austin’s Darcy. Both were extremely powerful and handsome in spite of their very obvious weakness every girl would be entranced.

So when I called my young cousin I made a recommendation to both the book and movie. Surprisingly I was told she had finished already the Twilight saga reading and even went through the last book in English due to then a delay of Chinese translated publication months ago. I was amused not only the book hit worldwide made me realised the Cinderella complex in a girl’s heart was laid down very consistent with no culture boundary but how quickly a teenage hit from America was received in China.

I could remember my high school reading of western literature was limited to classic novels Jane Austin Charles Dickens and Thomas Hardy sort because those were all I could find from bookstore or library. It was a jolly good thing that Twilight had become a hot chat among Chinese teenagers.
