Compared with the bustling and rustling praise and re-/over-interpreation over the past 20 years Obasan has been tranformed from postcolonial paragon to a self-marginalising strategist. The very imbalance between its original authorial intention and contemporary interpretive intention makes the very silence incarnated in obasan in the book very much in demand.

Reading Obasan without a regional sexual or historical exegesis is to give its due regards.
