I could not find a decisive demarcation of modernity-related-issues with non-modernity. The book seems to be more like textual ***ysis cultural-study things. But apart from the first text of Goethe's other selected literature is not that important to the author's arguments nor are their themes coherent or very well-organized. More like a good reflection on personal expeirence regarding modernity.
But Berman did provide a periodization of modernity: 16cc-18cc;1790s;20cc. However it is not precise and rough in terms of the detailed demarcation criteria and the historical significance.
By mixing up philosophy/literature/architecture/politics texts Berman tried to provide explicitly a comprehensive explanation of modernity. What a pity that they are not that powerful as the enthuastic author expected.
