I read this book of Xiaolu Guo's right after I finished reading 20 Frangments of a Ravenous Youth. I actually liked that one better thought this one was award-winning.

The main thing about this book is that the main characters' story is too cliched. The village the rape the run-away the return of the never-seen-father the father death and a man like Red it's all in there pretty much when I started to read this book.

Now having said that these plots could be quite fresh to the western audience.

It's still a good read though especially the translation is good.
