Beware the busy manager

Focus-Energy Matrix (10% Manager only are the Purposeful Manager)

1. Be a Purposeful Manager (one reason that purposeful managers are so effective is that they are adept at husbanding energy)

2. They are acutely aware of the choices they can make - and they systematically extend their freedom to act. They manager their bosses' expectations find ways to independently access required resources develop relationships with influential people and build specific competencies that broaden their choices and ability to act.

3. If you want to build a ship don't drum up the men to go to the forest to gather wood saw it and nail the planks together. Instead teach them the desire for the sea.

4.Typical Behavoir of successful GMs:

4-1 They spend most of their time with others.

4-2 They spend time with many people in addition to their direct

subordinates and their bosses.

4-3 They breadth of topics in their discusstion is extremely wide.

4-4 GMs ask a lot of questions

4-5 Durng conversations GM rerely seem to make "big" decisions.

4-6 Contain a fair amount of joking and often concern topics that are not

related to work

4-7 GMs spend most of their time with others in short disjointed

conversations.

4-8 They work long hours.

5. "Only 47% of their working time is taken up with managerial activities"

Completion of these activities becomes the measure of daily success

while more difficult and challenging tasks are squeezed out and remain

unmastered.
