It is so much fun to read. I recommend this book to every Steve Jobs fan you won't regret it. It took me five consecutive hours to finish half of this 350-page book and another four the other. It was probably the most joyful reading experience I had ever had.

For it is utterly gossipy.

The author Alan Deutschman is a true master of theatrical narrative. Revealing trivias from detailed conversations in critical meetings to every long-term relationships Steve Jobs ever had between Chris-ann and Laurene Powell the book unfolds just like a mix of highlight scenes of various renowned contemperary dramas. When Steve Jobs assembled NeXT employees the night before the release it is the Star Wars; when he first saw Laurene it is A Beautiful Mind; and when he first met with Jeffery Katzenburg The Godfather.

Besides it is unexpectedly funny.

Inside jokes and funny quotes coming out of the smartest brains of the Silicon Valley pop out every five pages. Here are just a few of dozens that tickled me into smiling:

"I don't get it. At NeXT Steve said 'Jump' and we said 'How high?' At Pixar they say 'Oh it's Steve'."

"I think it's odd that Bill lives right next door to Gary Larson but has no idea who he is."

"Who is he?"

"Have you heard my asshole theory?"

"No."

"If you look at the really big companyis that are still run by their founders they're all assholes."

"Did you just call me an ass hole?"

"Not in a bad sense."

(uh-huh Steve not in this one)

And I save the best for the last:

"Zeez eeez Feee-LEEEP Kahn! Zeee Macintosh sucks!"

(who made the call? no spoiler go read the book)

Nonetheless it is a shame with an epilogue titled "The Third Coming?" the book culminates at the year 2001 when the computer industry as a whole was being damaged by the global slump meanwhile Apple was suffering its first flop since the comeback of Steve Jobs the Cube. It looked all deja vu of the NeXT Cube a decade earlier and the Wall Street were panicking and quickly losing faith in Apple that were only regained not long before. The fate of Apple and Steve Jobs himself at that moment seemed uncertain again.

And there is not a single word about the iPod which even if had been released when this book was finished could no way possible be considered by the author or perhaps anyone - even Steve Jobs himself later not only a mere coming but a homerun leap forward for Apple and the world.

Even more sadly missed the pancreatic cancer.

Still a five-star read. Go buy and enjoy it.
