It is the second time I have pick up this book. I spent the whole afternoon reading and thinking. Many have depicted it as great work of love and revenge. I do agree that love is one of the important themes of the book.
I see Heathcliff’s love for Catherine. He left Wuthering Heights and came back for Catherine only. Even his elaborately designed revenge plan is out of his love for Catherine.
I see Linton’s love for Catherine as well. Knowing Catherine’s cruel and wicked side he insisted marry her. Understanding Catherine’s affection towards Heathcliff he was willing to bear the sour bitterness to Catherine’s pleasure.
However I was not moved by the greatly exalted love and instead confused by the distorted love. “Love me love my dog.” How could Heathcliff be so cruel to Cathy the only daughter of his loved one? How could Heathcliff be so relentless to his own son? How could Catherine still lead a happy life with Linton after the disappearing of Heathcliff? How could Catherine get pleasure for her own at the expense of Linton’s suffering? The two are indeed made for each other.
Linton is great willing to sacrifice and bear pains for his loved one.
